Voice Lessons

Who Takes Voice Lessons?

Many students start taking private lessons to help get prepared for auditions, performances, solos, and other specific events. Some students have vocal problems and need guidance in learning how to use their voice properly. Other students are looking for a new hobby and simply love to learn. Private instruction is encouraged for serious singers after the age of 10 and can continue for as long as you are capable of singing! Remember, you are never too old to start something new!

What are the advantages to taking lessons from a private voice teacher versus a "music school" or just watching instructional videos off of YouTube?  Private vocal instruction will give you more individualized attention, focusing on your strengths and weaknesses to take your voice to the next level.  Every voice is unique and needs to be treated as such!  This individualized attention is a tad more costly than the average music school fee, but the results speak for themselves!  Students RAVE about Rebecca's teaching techniques, her innate ability to hear what is missing and intuitively know how to fix it!  For those students who are willing to work hard and want to see true vocal transformation, private vocal instruction is the ONLY way to go!

What Should I Expect?

Students learn in a relaxed and nurturing environment as they are guided toward healthy vocal technique, confidence, and strong musical skills. Students are asked at the first lesson what their musical goals are (ex: increase range, produce more volume, conquer stage fright, etc.). The lessons will be developed and structured accordingly to help them reach those goals in a reasonable timeframe. Repertoire is assigned according to student interests and vocal abilities.

Prospective students need not have prior training - Rebecca is quite experienced in teaching students of ALL levels and abilities. Her individualized holistic approach ensures that each student develops a strong foundation in vocal technique and pedagogy.

Be prepared to share your voice with others!!!! Each student is encouraged regularly to pursue outside performance opportunities such as a studio masterclass, a solo at church or school, a musical theatre audition, vocal competition, or an open mic night. Annual studio recitals (typically in June) will be offered and it is encouraged that all members of the studio participate!

What Methods are Used?

Rebecca teaches with a functional voice training called bel canto (“beautiful singing”). The focus will always be on healthy and efficient vocal technique through a holistic approach. Having the breath balanced with proper use of registration will eliminate tension and unlock your vocal potential!

A typical lesson begins with physical warm-ups, breath management, and vocalises (vocal exercises). We are becoming vocal athletes… we need to learn the skills and always go back to the basics. Rebecca has been known to incorporate yoga moves into her vocal instruction, so come dressed appropriately! Students will also receive instruction on improving sight-reading skills, including solfege and ear training.
